Hi, I finally edited the video part for a composition that I made last september-october with pd and the yamaha disklavier. Thanks to Derek Holzer that helped me during a pd workshop in Helsinki to realize a first version of the piece.

pix_snap followed by pix_record or use pix_write and a third party tool like Quicktime Pro to make the image seuqence into a movie.

good to see you made your own video of this. Sara still has the one we shot in the workshop, but we haven't done anything with it yet. I think even just this morning I was wondering if I should post it somewhere. We must be tuned to the same psychic TV station!
One thing: I wished you had included a closeup of the horizontal shot of the piano...there are some amazing wave-like actions that happen as the phases of the keystrokes change that can't be seen well from above. Otherwise, fantastic.
I'd encourage people to check Libero's website for the very simple explanation of this piece. I know I appreciated it much more when I knew what was going on there.

About the video: you are right, but we had the time just to move the piano downstairs in the hall and shoot the video once. Also, the camera system at the time was just set up, and quite problematic to use.

my patch was just something i saw on the internet which i knew would be easy to make in pd. i forget what site it was.
Wow, it sounds exactly the same, or better, it is the same idea! Nice! And the visualisation part is really beautiful: it shows quite nicely the process. I´ll post mine, even what I wanted originally was a kaleidoscope kind of stuff as you did, really effective. My original source of inspiration was the poème pour 100 métronomes by Ligeti. Before it was performed here in Helsinki, it seemed that nobody could find all the metronomes required (the pyramid ones). The Ligeti piece has however completely random speed. So I thought to make a pd version of it to replace the performance, but they eventually found the metronomes. Later I thought to make a disklavier version of it. The sound with the piano, reminded me some of his piano studies, ie. désordre. But, as an hommage to maybe the most accurate composer of the last century (on many aspects), I wanted to make a precise version, that´s why I took the canon path. The title is referred to a composition by Josquin Desprez after Ockeghem death.
Another inspiration was a web page with an analysis of a Nancarrow´s study, that is, in fact, a proportional canon quite complex, but not as recursive as our process. Unfortunately I think the page is not anymore on line.

I'm somehow disappointed.... I always thought that Poeme Symphonique was a cool composition, in which as your ears adjust to the sounds of 100 metronomes, new patterns and pitches can emerge. But I think the audio quality is not good enough here. They have to compress the audio like that, so it's really a poor demonstration of the composition. I bet that it's a *lot* better live :)
On the other hand, *your* composition is awesome!!!! I freaking love it!
I had made a composition, also inspired by Ligeti, awhile back, in which I used Shepard tones as an instrument (you know the Risset technique for producing a loop which continually decreases/increases in pitch). Well, I took the Risset loop, gapped it into notes and applied a non-linear function which creates random rhythms in it. Also, it's a canon :)
check out my page at: http://czh.zapto.org/composition.html There you will find the freqsweep suite, and freqsweep3.wav (the largest one) has many characteristics similar to yours, such as emergent patterns and the seeming constant continuous changes in pitch. You will probably want to try to download it, and not play it from the site. It will simply take too long.

This piece reminds a study of polyrythms I've made with mixing together prime numbers of notes into a 4/4 bar, where we can hear how the notes are regrouped at the symmetric point (the middle) of the bar, this gives a kind of cyclic compression-decompression of notes density. I'm actually working on a DS musical score patch that almost illustrate it, here is a sample:

The guitar is not that hard to play, after all. Diatonic scales line up very well in 19-tet, but there's extra notes in between. In 12-tet you have a diatonic scale as follows: 0,2,4,5,7,9,11,12 In 19-tet, you have 0,3,6,8,11,14,17,19 so, there are notes of the chromatic scale as follows: C,C#,Db,D,D#,Eb,E,E#,F,F#,Gb,G,G#,Ab,A,A#,Bb,B,B#,C
Chords based on diatonic scale line up very well in 19-tet. I can play nearly anything on the "microtonal" 19-tet scale that I could also play in 12-tet. It's advantage is in chromatic voice variation, since there are extra notes to use, and some intervals become evenly divisible. Example, a perfect 4th is 8/19th of an octave; it's divisible by 2,4, or 8 On the other hand, 19 is a prime number, so none of the intervals evenly divide the octave any more. So, diminished/augmented chords are out, despite having more variations that all sound like dim or aug chords with small variations
At the moment, I have tuned the guitar from C to E, so that the frequency ratio between any two strings is an odd harmonic ratio.

Yes indeed, the patch I've provided is more about having fun with visuals than sequencing, but I'm planning to do something more usefull for musical score writing, the really interesting part for me is that we can divide the time by any integer ratio, and then it give the possibility of breaking the rules imposed by MIDI sequencing.

This guitar could be very usefull for playing in-between notes of arabic erudite music, and then resolve problems involved by all differents scales used in different regions of north africa.
Haven't done much musical for months so I got nothing... but I'm loving this thread. Listening to Pd related music most the afternoon it's truly inspirational. More please..
