Thank you both!
I've been using Patch Base: https://coffeeshopped.com/patch-base https://coffeeshopped.com/patch-base
I was thinking it might be neat to have something a bit more autonomous than manual editing but less messy than the Random button.
Ctrlr looks cool, and thanks for the dx7 link, Sebastian - it didn't turn up in my search, but I may have been asking the wrong questions.
Cheers Dafydd

Sure, it is not a difficult task but can be time consuming. Pd has some distinct advantages over programs like ctlr which was not very reliable when I tested it (couple years ago), mainly it was difficult to get it to work well with multiple synths at one time all controlled by an external midi controller.

Has anybody made a patch editor for a MIDI synth? I’ve got a few here that I’m just sick of menu-diving on and realized there’s a solution on my computer already.

Hi Dafydd,
Have you looked at Edisyn?
https://github.com/eclab/edisyn
It doesn't use PD, but I've had great success with it. I can't speak for how well it handles (if at all) multiple synths.
Best, Matt

Thanks Matthew - this looks very cool, and talks to my TX81Z, which is *such a pain in the neck to program*.
