if you want a [change] that will always output its first value, regardless of what it is, then you could set up a little thing like this attached patch

i disagree.
[change] *always* takes an argument, which is the initial value. if you fail to provide one, it will default to '0'. changing this behaviour might break patches, hence it is a no-go.
