I thought that was only sample rate, as it was announced in the time.
so yeah, I guess an "info" message that just spits the header stuff out would do the job for what I want,

Well, It doesn't really do that, it just gives you the sample rate now, but I've suggested it could also give you number of channels and other information, see https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/issues/179
