well, i've never tried to compile any of my externals for windoof myself, but i try to avoid functions marked in the libc docs as "GNU extensions", so I'd guess that the chances of compiling 'readdir' for windows are actually not too slim...
if anyone does do such a thing, i'm happy to link to a binary from my site (gotta get this stuff into CVS one of these days...)
that said, for portability, it's probably safest to go with tot or python or ruby or <insert language here> that can do exactly what you want ... i write mostly C because i don't want to bother learning python ;-)
