i'll second the redhat 8... it is by far the slickest linux distro i've used. i installed it the other day on my laptop and it found all my hardware painlessly... one big benefit is that since redhat is that most popular distro, almost every "bleeding edge" app is available for it. a few of my friends adn my brother (hans) are pretty big on debian, but from my limited experience it definitely seems like the "power egghead distribution". :)

Another option is RedHat 8.0 + PlanetCCRMA, as I do.
Another one is DeMuDi but I think Frank (?) can say something more on this.

Try the latest Mandrake 9.1rc2 with the "cooker" updates. Support for audio is very good. There's even a kernel with the low latency patches. Package management with urpmi is getting better. Exotic applications (those who can't distributed my Mandrake because of bad patents or other restrictions) are available from the PLF site. You should like it. I do... -- Marc

Hello,
I'm going to switch my laptop from Windows to Linux in a couple months. I just wanted to know which distributions, desktop environments, etc. you all use. Are some distributions of Linux more flexible with the various hardware that people use (MIDI, USB, etc)? Thanks so much!
