No. The rPI is audio out only, as noted in a recent list discussion where pd balks when you try to start it using the onboard audio without -noadc.

You're right-- $9 soundcard won't give you that. But for a desktop mic or one that Katja makes, this will be more than sufficient.
So the onboard audio doesn't do input?

Couple that with an $9 USB audio card that has both input and output

... well, I dunno about that part. :D Some of us want phantom power & XLR/1/4 in. The RPI doesn't play nicely with any of the cards I have ...

Depends what you mean by decent enough. Original Pi has audio out. Is it decent enough, depends on your needs. That said, RPi (regardless of the revision) is a formidable arduino replacement. See lots of pots shield that fits either (I just presented a paper on it in NIME) made by modern device. Couple that with an $9 USB audio card that has both input and output and you're done.

But I wonder if the onboard audio is now decent enough to do basic work with Pd.

I can't say much without playing with one, but I get the impression from comments that the USB ports at least aren't as finicky about power. Right now I just use a Powered USB hub to power my Pi Model B, Behringer UCG102, and a QuNeo controller. Maybe the B+ could work without the hub?
Those extra GPIO pins could definitely come in handy, too - if you are connecting some buttons or pots, you shouldn't need to add an Arduino.
I'm still curious about the real-world performance of the Pi relative to the UDOO, Cubie, or similar boards - I've got decent performance with my Pi at about 10ms latency with a couple of effects running. If I push it too much, sure, I get xruns, but it's not like I can get insanely better performance with my laptop (which has an i5).

The onbopard audio might be better, but from what I could tell by the press release, it does't add a dedicated USB controller. In that case, it will probably still have the same issues with USB audio devices.
Anybody played with the new Raspberry Pi model? It claims to
haveimproved audio; I'm curious how that would effect a running instance of Pd on the Pi.
