Probably HID would be the best solution. It should have a faster transmission than the serial port as well - I think ...
I'll need to check out which ones of the newer arduinos can transmit as a HID device. I'm pretty sure that the current Teensy can do it.
If anyone has used this already it would be great to hear if it is working without problems.
I personally only need to transmit from the Arduino to Pd and not the other way around.

Not that I know of. Maybe newer Arduinos have a USB driver that handles this better? AFAIK the only way to get around this issue is to use a Byron/Minia http://www.1010.co.uk/org/byron.html and use the HID or MIDI-USB for the (Sensor-)input. Newer Arduinos should be able to reprogram the USB Atmel chip to behave like a Keyboard/HID/MIDI-USB, That would work too.
My computer won't crash if I unplug the Arduino without closing the serial port.
And Pd is not freezing either?
