Martin, Julian, do you plan to do some documentation / tutorial of the work you're doing? I haven't followed the thread in detail, but it looks like you guys have accomplished quite a bit of stuff...

Yes indeed... well, kind of.
For my project we have some C code that Martin Peach put together that pipes the sensor data into Pd via UDP.
Works really very well so have stalled on [gpio]. I did get data in and out of [gpio] without any issues though and Jaime improved the help patch considerably (well - he wrote one!)
My memory is that Jaime's help patch is on the thread you've linked to and here's the rather lengthy one between Martin and I - watch out though there's lots of it (70+ posts currently).
