So I traded that G3 for another from the stack. Bits of plastic missing, but it works and has more room on the drive. I read online how one can network OSX and Windows with firewire... they call it "IP over Firewire": http://www.lifehacker.com/software/networking/geek-to-live-fast-one-wire-net... But it's mentioned as a way to transfer files. Does anyone know if this "network" method would work for running PD? If so it seems like it would be the perfect way, for its speed...
Thanks. Chuckk

Now the CD-rom drive won't open. I may have to take it back and grab a different one (he had a stack of them and said I could just take one).
this is a pretty common problem. the case uses some funky contraption to pass through the button press. if the drive, or the outer plastic shell is not in the right place, the force won't be transferred. on top of that, the opening for the tray is exactly the size of the tray. so any offset means it won't come out. thank goodness for slot-loading drives, since apple has never been able to design a drive-bay flap to save their life
I peeled that flap down and pressed the actual button, no difference. It makes a short servo sound, followed by a sort of clickety thud, so I take it the drive is mechanically stuck.
