Dear list,
Does anyone know the units (and scale) for the threshold setting in bonk~? I can't seem to make sense of it...
Jamie
Hello
I don't know if it helps, but here is a a mail exchange I had with Miller Puckette about this subject (you can find it on the mailing list archive too I think) :
Hmm, units...
"thresh" is in "growth" units, which is the sum of the proportional growth in the 11 filter bands; proportional growth is essentially the logarithmic time derivative.
"minvel" is in the units of the velocity output, which is the sum of the square roots of the amplitudes of the bands, normalized so that 100 is an attack of amplitude about one.
the whole thing is quite spooky I'm afraid.
cheers Miller

I'm amazed this worked! bonk~ needs for the attack to "settle down" within about 20 milliseconds from the beginning of the note; I had no idea an electric bass could do that...
yes, actually before trying it I thought it wouldn't work of course it's not perfect, I know [bonk~] is rather suited to percussions
that
have a sharp attack, like traditionnal african drums or snare drum for
example
it looks like this particular bassist attacks the strings quite strongly (as
if
it was a fingered double-bass or another acoustic string instrument) : you
can
clearly "hear" (and see on a waveform or a spectrogram) his finger plucking
the
string and then the sound decreasing
I don't know for these 20 ms, I will have a look at a waveform (I agree it looks very short for a bass)
but the [debounce 0( parameter message could be a bad idea (I get actually "too many" attack times)
by the way, what is the unit for the 'minvel' and 'thresh' parameter
messages ?
looks like being something from 0 to 100, but I don't know
thanks,

hello
I'm working on some patches I will use during a live performance
involving
a
fretless bass player I want to use the [bonk~] object with the bass, for detecting attacks
To start with it, I kept the same [bonk~] configuration messages as the
ones I
used earlier for percussion :
thresh 6 50 minvel 10 mask 4 0.7 debounce 0
Actually it works quite well, but I would like to know if some of you had
an
experience regarding the use of [bonk~] with a bass. Which parameters
should I
use ? The bassist plays very well, with a strong attack (a bit like Jaco
Pastorius
but without the chorus effect), and the bass is a Squire Jazz Bass on
which
the
frets were removed
Thank you very much for your help
