Not necessarily. Here's a simple FM patch where dynamic patching + data structures are used to visualize the signal data in the object chain itself. Once you get an interesting sound just click the "wires" to animate.
It's a nice gimmick to trick people who don't like reading boring graph data into reading slightly less boring graph data. (Not sure how to make labels to show the scale, though...)
