Modern mac's don't need cross-over cables, the ethernet ports auto-switch when attached to a second machine and not a hub. (tested only on my g5 powerbook)
Any normal ethernet cable from one machine to the other will work.

My questions are:
Can I connect the computers via ethertnet? How?
with a cable.
...
one cross-cable or two straight cables hooked on a hub or switch
What do I need to do to setup the ports and IP addresses?
just make sure it's on the same network (same ip range, same netmask ...)
example: pc = 192.168.0.10 mac = 192.168.0.11 netmask 255.255.255.0
make sure you don't have any firewall running on both machines, or you may not go very far with netsend/netreceive.
