Your Pd experience should tell you that any feature exposed will be tried and documented by the community, and become a de facto standard.
For example, [pack] and [unpack] are not there to do type-checking, but somehow it has become a backward-compatibility issue. Following the documentation, there's nothing saying that you can rely on [pack] and [unpack] to filter out and report messages that do not fit the type declarations, but that's still how some people use it, and they'd rather have this de facto compatibility than strict by-the-book compatibility.
(And does the documentation of [pack] explicitly forbids, or does it explicitly states exceptions to what is officially documented?)
