btw, ubuntu studio comes with a generic kernel, whereas 64studio has a realtime-optimized kernel.
Not anymore: Ubuntustudio 7.10 has a fully rt-patched kernel, I just recently installed it on a friend's machine. But my main point is, that it is not necessary to reinstall a system just because of one component. I run the same Debian install on my main machine that I installed like 8 years ago. Of course I updated packages, stiwched hardware etc., but I never reinstalled from scratch.
yo, that is the way how linux works, for sure. but from a psychological perspective, it might feel good to make 'tabula rasa'. also do many people tend (me included) to install stuff and install stuff, so that they don't anymore what was installed. and even if you remove that stuff, the stuff, that was installed, because it was a dependency of the previous stuff, remains installed. there are for sure clean ways to handle that, but starting from scratch just 'feels' very different -> you _add_ something (positive), you don't _remove_ stuff (negative).
i am sure, i'll do a 'install from scratch' again once in the future, even if it cannot be justified from a purely technical point of view.
