ok, i got it now:
i was missing "libslang-dev". as soons as i installed it and recompiled the whole bunch (aalib, pdp, pidipd) , everything worked fine.
hope this spare's some other user's time ;-)

did you remove previous aalib ??
in case it doesn't work, just comment pdp_aa and AALIB flags in the makefile, you'll still have pdp_ascii which does ascii rendering too.
