Yep, on Linux (I don't know on other OS) you have to specify the path to your vera.ttf (by default) in file> path.
Gem always needs to find the truetype font in order to be able to render a text. it will look for the default font "vera.ttf" in all search-paths of Pd, including the the patch's home.
