hmm: apart from all the flamewars about whether it's a good idea or not to use .d_fat and/or .pd_darwin, why do you imply that only files with .pd_darwin are "normal" externals? given the vanilla bible of Pd both are equals.
For the same reasons that were discussed when these extensions were introduced. For Mac OS X, the d_fat, etc extentions cause problems without solving any. No other Mac OS X app that I have seen uses arch-specific file extentions. Mac OS X provides tools for managing the different binary formats, so it should be considered harmful to invent new ones. I think the d_fat, etc. should be deprecated and removed from Pd.
