If you do "Open workspace" and then choose the makefile in VC you can use its compile tools (F7 to compile F4 - next error - very quick) but you need to edit the makefile to make changes to the project

If it's any help, when I tried with VC, the whole front end business kind of got in the way - I found it easier just to use nmake from the command line, in the end....
