It works here without problem (both send and receive on localhost, 0.44-extended, host is Kubuntu 12.04). Maybe the port is already in use, but this would probably be reported in the console. Another reason could be that a firewall blocks the messages.

I have made this work many times. Make sure you have all the libraries loaded. Can you share your patch and sketch?
