If the ownership is root.root, then add your account to the root group,
and you won't have to mess with permissions anymore.
As for devfs/udev, I still use static files as well. I'll switch to
udev once Debian does the switch for me :).

I'm still using "hard" devices. But also udev should be able to give devices certain permissinons.
