even if its a bit intrusive, maybe ask the student, if he has installed a cracked version of adobe software. i have had students with similar problems and it turned out, that they had applied the adobe hack wrongly and killed their localhost.
it was well worth the embarrassement…after fixing pd did run and they could still use their adobe whatever.

Hi all,
A student cannot get to run Pd in OS X 10.11.4 and 10.11.6.
When one clicks on the Pd app it briefly shows up the icon in the open applications, but then quickly disappears. This happens with the latest as well as previous versions of Pd Vanilla.
Anyone having the same problem?
best,
J
