The svf~ external is quite nice (IIRC, it's a PD port of a LADSPA plugin by Steve Harris). You can get it as part of the PD externals package available at http://pure-data.sourceforge.net/index.php
It's quite potent - I've used it to create an approximation of the synthesis method for an 808 bass drum (a pulse driving a highly resonant filter).
I suppose you can get a seperate copy of svf~ somewhere, but you'd better get the SoundForge package - it's kind of like Christmas time for PD.

i need a really nice sounding filter with control over the Q. ... i've tried piecing one together from [lop~] and [hip~] and [vcf~] but i can never get around it having a dead, muddy sound, i'd like one that sounds really warm like the default one in fruity loops or on many synthesizers.
does anyone either have some tips on how to do this myself, a patch where they've made a nice one, or pointers to a good one in an external somewhere? i'm looking fro both low and high pass filters.
cheers,
josh
