hey.
maybe your perspective is different
i agree
doing composition and now video art
why dont you make music and motion picture instead (as i do. word "art" should be forbidden)
if I spend my time on the install and not composing
linux installers became quite easy, painless and fast (max 30 min)
The Demudi CD, as I understand it, requires partitioning etc.
there is a Demudi liveCD at http://demudi.agnula.org/images/1.2.1/demudi-live_1.2.1_i386.iso or if you only need PD, get Ubuntu and install PD. there is also a PD-Knoppix liveCD at http://d.linux-bg.org/?folder=distros/pd-knoppix/
I'm VERY worried of messing up my Windows install
windblows is already a mess once you installed it
Especially since I'm on a laptop, and I've heard there can be problems with this... Also, I really only want to do PD audio+video, not much else offhand that I'd use Linux for at this point.
im on a laptop too, no probs (unless i deserve them). Ubuntu should be your choice then.
I spent about two weeks on Linux on my (now dead) desktop, and it wasn't so great an experience getting things to work. There just isn't good documentation out!!! At the least, I need a manual that explains things from beginner on in easy steps... including partitioning best practices for a dual OS install.
all linux distros have at least one mailing list, and im sure there will be a couple of guys to help you out. documentation is everywhere, try google.
honestly, for 5 years ago i didnt even own a computer, i just played my bass. a week ago i did my first gig with PD on demudi, which really pulled some teeth. nothing is impossible when you have time to imagine it. dont give up
best regards daniel .

Hey, I understand maybe your perspective is different, but sometimes for someone like me doing composition and now video art, things need to work "out of the box"... I'm on deadlines - often with a week or two to prepare some new project or music. SO, if I spend my time on the install and not composing, then I won't have my work completed.
The Demudi CD, as I understand it, requires partitioning etc. - right now my 80 GB hard drive is so full I don't even have space to defrag it ... so that's not so practical until I get rid of some stuff, and I'm VERY worried of messing up my Windows install - which would REALLY be bad for me.
I thought a live CD geared towards pure data might help things get going quicker. At least I can see how it works before I "commit" to making enough space for it on my laptop and making a serious install. Especially since I'm on a laptop, and I've heard there can be problems with this... Also, I really only want to do PD audio+video, not much else offhand that I'd use Linux for at this point.

hey.
My experiences with Linux were just too difficult and have discouraged me
too easy to say...things just take their time...
However I'd be very happy if that Pure:Dyne CD gets released and I could have an instant operating system ready for PD and audio...
i encourage you to try demudi http://demudi.agnula.org/ (i love to say that). if you've got a god machine, "PD and audio" on demudi really pull some teeth. (love to say that too)
Or if PDP gets ported to Win
why ?
well that would make me very happy too
arent you happy now?
best regards daniel .
