That means that the PD gui cannot connect to the X display
try "export DISPLAY=":0"

Hmm. I tried running PD with -noadc and -nodac . Now my computer doesn't crash, just that specific window. I can ctrl alt F3 to another session. The message I get now is:
Application Initialization failed no display name no $Display environment variable.
Any further thoughts? Jim
type pd my machine freezes. I know it is starting because it is telling me I have no midi in or out. I can't even escape with ctrl alt del . The message I get is: Oops :0000 EIP: 0010: [<c98ffcca>] EFLAGS: 00010246 etc etc.
Its hard to say but my first guess is a faulty sound card driver. Have you sucessfully tested other apps with audio input/output? Or... try starting PD with -nodac -noadc.
