This is a problem of the linux driver. You can listen to the input, because it is wired "directly" to your output, but you are not able to get clean sound into your computer under linux. This happens with lots of cheap soundchips for laptops (actually I never had a laptop where sound input worked ), and its because the driver developers under linux do not have enough information about the chip, in the most cases. It might be different dependent on which driver you use (OSS or ALSA).

hello:
Thanks for your reply.
Ummmm, I think my laptop's adc is ok because the input sounds fine outside of Pd (but the fuzzy recording problem applies to all my other linux audio apps). Am I making sense? I mean I can listen to the input ok, but once its recorded or put through Pd's adc~, it becomes fuzzy. Also, my machine is dual boot with Windows, listening and recording the input is also ok in Windows.
Any ideas?
Many thanks again

Hi there:
Just a quick question. I am running Pd in Fedora on a toshiba laptop. I have just tried taking sounds from the laptop's audio input. I just made a simple adc~ connects to dac~ to hear the input sound.
The sounds appears to be pretty fuzzy or clipped no matter how I adjust the levels in the volume control of fedora.
Any idea anyone?
well, it could just be your laptops adc. for instance, when i use the adc~ on my laptop (which only has mic-in (no line-in)) i have a noise about -20dB. apart from tapping directly on to the microphone-slot this makes it quite useless for me...
