thank you for your help! i couldn't wangle it yet to turn off (get out of) the full screen mode, but i can destroy the gem window in the full screen mode. so i can get back to the patch without shooting down the computer;)
I guess you could do this:
[gemkeyname] | [sel X] | [0, destroy, fullscreen 0, create, 1( | [gemwin]
to switch from fullscreen to windowed mode.

if it's the same as on ubuntu, you can use [gemkeyname] The fullscreen gemwin takes the focus and doesn't want to give it away. Therefore, while you can initiate the fullscreen mode with [key], to get out of it you need to use something like [gemkeyname]--[sel X]--[0,destroy(--[gemwin]. There may be other ways that I don't know of...
