I am guessing that it has something to do with waveshaping, but I don't really know, and I've not been able to get a sound like that with my feeble waveshaping attempts.

Also nice can be tanh(), also filters before/after/between various distortions, also delay feedback loops with distortion/compression, but that's not what you asked :)
