I am seriously thinking about changing to suse
did you consider using debian? i am running debian sarge (the testing branch) with a 2.6 and have had only good experience - so far i installed pd as well as jack, audacity, spiral modular, rosegarden, ardour and some other music software, all from the super easy-to-use apt archives (much easier than installing rpm packages). i also know that there's an audio derivative of debian called demudi, which may be even better (but i haven't tried it).
debian has a bit of a pr problem - because of being a grassroots effort many people (including myself, until recently) assume that it will be harder to install and administrate than commercial products like red-hat or suse. but in fact it is a much easier os to admin, and it has a huge precompiled software library.
