you shouldn't try to de-couple the execution of the render-chain from the "gemclock". whenever [gemhead] sends out the gemlist-message, it is assured that the openGL-context of the gem-window is the current one. if you call it "sometimes else", this cannot be guaranteed any more.
if you want full control over the render-cycle, you could do something with single-buffered mode (but i guess this is broken :-()
