Make sure you are root, and that you don't have another apt-enabled program running. The "cannot get exclusive lock" error message is one that I get when I am running synaptic (in order to browse the files on planet CCRMA) and then doing apt-get from the command-line at the same time (since synaptic sometimes fails to install packages properly for me
find out the names of the packages I want, then quit synaptic, and use "apt-get install <packagename>" from the command line to actually install them. -David M.

hi there:
i am in process of setting up Pd on a Fedora machine but am having a bit of a problem getting apt installed. i wonder if anyone could give me a hand.
i got to download the two .rpm files
apt-0.5.15cnc2-1.rhfc1.ccrma.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.15cnc2-1.rhfc1.ccrma.i386.rpm
and when i try to install it by typing
rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.15cnc2-1.rhfc1.ccrma.i386.rpm
then i got this:
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
as a result when i try to install the second file i got
error: Failed dependencies: apt = 0.5.15cnc2-1.rhfc1.ccrma is needed by
apt-devel-0.5.15cnc2-1.rhfc1.ccrmaany ideas?
many thanks
