Scott,
checking for main in -lttf... no checking alternate -lttf in ../../..... configure: error: library ttf not available - run ./makeauxlibs script
Do you have a ttf library installed? Have you tried running makeauxlibs?
I find that with computers it helps to read what is written on the screen and then take action according to the messages output. Of course, you can always circumvent this by posting the results to the pd list and get others to read for you, but this has the negative side effects of a) pissing everyone off b) it will slow your compilation time considerably if you have to post the results of every compile. Good luck.
Kind regards,
Chris.

the latest GEM wouldn't work for me because of all that pixes and quicktime BS, so i'm trying an older version. it just so happens that i'm a lucky lucky guy and this one won't work either.
GEM is easy to get up and running in windows, but to compile an external in windows is living hell. in linux compiling externals is easy but i can't get GEM to work after MONTHS OF TRYING. anyway here's the very end of the errors this time:
checking for connect... yes checking for remove... yes checking for shmat... yes checking for IceConnectionNumber in -lICE... yes checking for main in -lX11... yes checking for main in -lXext... yes checking for sin in -lm... yes checking for glInitNames in -lGL... yes checking for gluLookAt in -lGLU... yes checking for main in -ltiff... yes checking for main in -ljpeg... yes checking for main in -lttf... no checking alternate -lttf in ../../..... configure: error: library ttf not available - run ./makeauxlibs script
