i think it took longer to compile jMax than it actually existed.

No idea. Pd is not a branch of Max anyway.
jMax is a branch of Max that appeared after Pd appeared.
All the rest is a bunch of internal forks and renamings that were pretty much internal to IRCAM and that the outside world shouldn't care about.
