You'll also need the font library : ftgl, that you can install with fink. my configure line here on osx 10.6 is: ./configure --with-pd=/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/include/pd/ --enable-fat-binary=i386 --with-ftgl-includes=/sw/include/ --with-ftgl-libs=/sw/lib/

the Gem way to do this is to specify the fat architectures via configure _flags_: $ ./configure --enable-fat-binary=i386 will in the end create a "fat" binary that holds (only) i386 binaries.
