Hi all, i found a solution and it's in cvs - by default, initial attributes given to an objects are not hidden any more (but they can be by defining FLEXT_ATTRHIDE, which yields a flext build that is non-portable between PD versions). Flext-based externals built with the current flext cvs version should thus be running ok under 0.39 and other PD versions. The new look of flext objects with attributes is probably closer to the PD paradigm and not too a bad compromise.
best greetings, Thomas

i realized that the graphical side of attribute-handling is not compatible with pd version 0.39. This means that flext-based objects will display in a strange way or not be visible at all. I'm about to fix this... at the moment the only way to circumvent these problems is to compile flext with the flag -DFLEXT_NOATTREDIT and also rebuild the externals.
