ciao henrik
i am not quite sure, which one the ardiuno diecimila is (couldn't find any info about it), but there are some points, that could be checked anyway, when working with arduino:
software? (sorry, if that seems too obvious, but i experienced, that people sometimes didn't know that)
object, you are using?
software? in 'menu -> tools -> Microcontroller(MCU)' two are listed: Atmega8 and Atmega168. i think, the default setting is 'Atmega8', although newer boards come with a 'Atmega168' shipped. i experienced many times, that this was the culprit, since it is even possible to upload a firmware for the wrong chip.
output mode?
did you activate the inputs, so that they report anything?
please report any error and not just 'i had some errors'
what exactly did you do to trigger this errors?

i think, it would try to send data even with no usb connected, as long it has power. depends on what firmware is on it.
various older versions of the arduino board.
i suspect a software/firmware problem here. if you tried with other boards as well, you probabyl would also have had to upload the proper firmware first. did you do that?
