Hi,
thanks for that, have looked at the maxlib stuff, am presuming that I could implement netclient and netserver in my pd application and then write my own socket to send/ receive in C++ in my C++ communicating application - I'm guessing here that there is no inherent restriction written within netclient/server that will only allow it to communicate with other pd netserver/client (respectively) implementations of socket? ie. when the data has left pd it is passed in exactly the same way as any other socket implementation? also... raising up an oldie question for me here....it would be silly to attempt to transfer audio???

Have you looked at netserver/netclient in Olaf Matthes' maxlib? They are based on netsend/netreceive so they might have the same latency problem, but they make working with network connections in pd much easier.

Hi kurt,
thanks for that, but if I were to go down the route of using communication protocols I would probably try to use tcp/ip (or udp?) as I think(?) it is in some way built into pd in order to communicate with the gui (not at all sure about this)- but I would presume this involves effectively writing a stand alone version of netsend/ receive. Have copied to list, as always, I am confused but interested. thanks again

hi mandy,
I'm not a programmer but as i understand it OSC is 'simply' a network protocol so if you can code C++ you should be able to write an application that can communicate with other applications/devices using OSC.
osc homepage >> http://cnmat.cnmat.berkeley.edu/OSC/
with OSC I can make my pd patches communicate with a variety of other computers/applications/people while performing. I've used it to 'talk' with flash, eyesweb and Max....
hopes this helps

can osc allow you to send data from a C++ application to a pd application? (only just heard of osc) thanks Mandy

have you tried OSC?
