Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I'm sure I'll find a workable solution with one of them. I won't have time for a week or so to try them all out. I tried briefly to install ext13 yesterday but had loads of compile errors.

No, don't try, if you don't know C at least *good*. Coding an ALSA mixer external is in no way simple. Even the "simple" amixer util has more than 1500 lines of code. *I* wouldn't go near this unless I really was under physical pressure.
