just in case: you are aware of the problems on linux with starting the audio-engine with loadbang in a nogui-environment? http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2724318&group_id=557...
the workaround usually is to delay the "; pd dsp 1" message sufficiently.

it sounds like a pulseaudio problem. Ubuntu comes with a sound deamon called pulseaudio. Pd doesn't like it, but other apps are okay with it.
try killing or removing pulseaudio or doing "pasuspender"
and then starting pd with alsa.
