as far as i can think, there is no solution with only built-in objects. at least, i don't know of a way to split a single symbol into a list, which you certainly would need. the is [symbol2list] from zexy, which is able to do that. use [symbol2list .] to convert 'symbol yourfile.wav' to 'list yourfile wav', then you can turn the last argument of the list 'wav' into 'mp3' (using select).
btw: a [symbol2list] (or whatever it should be called) is really missing in pd, even more, since one can do the opposite (see franks [list-l2s] from the list-abs).
