[zl sub] is better, perhaps, since it outputs an index of the matching atom(s). There is also [match], which might be more handy, because a pattern is accepted as argument(s), e.g. [match test] fires when one of the list's atoms is 'test'.
In case substrings (parts of atoms) are to be matched, the sequence [spell] -> [sprintf %c] -> [match t e s t] might do.
