Sending a 'FSAA $1' message to the gemwin before creating it will enable multi-sampling as well. I usually use a value of 4, but some cards will do up to 16x I think.

Hi list,
i just found out how to change the behaviour of the ATI graphic card on OS X. the display looks much better now!
this is how it looks normally
this is how it looks with the antialiasing on the gfx card.
the [polygon_smooth] object does not do anything on my system, so i installed the ati driver https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp? deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=299 were you can change the settings on the ati card for each app separately. selecting the pd.app does not do the trick. to enable the setting for gem you need to open the package content, navigate to Contents/Resources/ then open the ati control panel go to the 3d settings (openGL priority) click on the add button, a file chooser window pops up. drag the bin directory of the package content into the file chooser window. the bin directory will show up in the drop down menue. select the pd application in the bin directory. this only works with the pd++ package of tigital, unfortunately not with HCSteiners package.
hope it helps somebody.
