[counter] is a class provided by several libraries, but not by plain pd. all versions of [counter] should be included in pd-extended, though.
i wouldn't recommend to use [counter], since all available versions slightly differ from each other. it's likely, that your patches using [counter] will break in case you change the order of loading the libraries (or change to another pd-extended version etc) . also it's something, that could be easily implemented with a handful of vanilla classes:
[f ]X[+ 1] this is the simplest idiom of a counter
this is only an example. the advantages of creating your own [your_counter] are:
there has been much discussion about counters on this list, just in case you would like to read different opinions on this topic as well. personally, i never have felt the need for a [counter] class.
