You might also just write a standalone gtk file chooser and use OSC (search for Steve Harris' liblo) to send/receive the file message over the net. In fact this would be very simple to to with pyGTK. And add to that, if might already be done with gripd.
That is a good idea, but I don't want or need anything as complex, as the primary reason for using the GTK file chooser is for accessibility reasons, and I then don't have to redesign something from scratch, and I know it works.
