Hallo Ruth,
(another thing: could you shorten your mail so the messages from the digest not related to this thread aren't quoted? Most people already have them.)

And got exactly the same error message about the libvos3gcc3.so library not being found, despite the link being present in the appropriate directory.
Actually Pd shouldn't link to that library at all and I'm puzzled why you get this message. I've never seen this. Typically pd-gui only link to these libraries:
$ ldd /usr/lib/pd/bin/pd-gui linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000) libtk8.4.so.0 => /usr/lib/libtk8.4.so.0 (0xb7e99000) libtcl8.4.so.0 => /usr/lib/libtcl8.4.so.0 (0xb7deb000) librt.so.1 => /lib/tls/librt.so.1 (0xb7de2000) libjack-0.100.0.so.0 => /usr/lib/libjack-0.100.0.so.0 (0xb7dca000) libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7c98000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7c86000) libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 (0xb7b9a000) libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/libdl.so.2 (0xb7b96000) libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0xb7b70000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7f92000) libXau.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXau.so.6 (0xb7b6d000) libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6 (0xb7b68000)
Could you send your output when doing "ldd /usr/.../pd-gui"?
And libvos3gcc3 is something specific to OpenOffice.
