wait,
suse 7 comes with libtk8.3.so - seems like pd searches for libtk8.0.so
had to download the older tcl/tk packages from ftp.suse.com to get pd running (the file i found on this machine was only this single file downloaded, suse definitely comes with the newer 8.3 version)
miller: what is the problem with newer versions of tcl/tk ?

Or /etc/ld.so.conf should contain the path - after adding it here you should run ldconfig.

Check your LD_LIBRARY_PATH; it should contain the directory where libtk8.0.so is stored.

../bin/pd-gui: error in loading shared libraries: libtk8.0.so:
cannot open
shared object file: no such file or directory
--i searched for this file and it is present on this machine -- i
added
the directory where this file is to the path, i copied it to the bin directory
- but nothing worked
