but why would someone want to use an external if they can just use built ins ? what is wrong with [symbol $1] ?
Nothing. But imagine browsing an incoming message inside an abstraction against its creation arguments - due to its inlet (which allows to choose what argument will be put out), this is pmuch easier with $n than with [symbol $x], which would probably involve some ugly makefilename hacks. Or so I thought a while ago ...
