just curious...
channels; in the meantime, we regularily use Pd with 64 channels output; this is of course with some "super soundcard",
whats the hardware for this?
thanks! m

I haven't been able to get the Sapphire to output more than two channels through Pd (though it is supposed to be capable of 8).
don't know this card but have you set the number of output channels to 4?
i second that. Pd is definitely made for multi- and manychannel setups. (the first publicly shown project i did in Pd was 1999, when we used 16 channels; in the meantime, we regularily use Pd with 64 channels output; this is of course with some "super soundcard", but it's just to tell you, that Pd can and will do it's part of the multichannel setup; for information on whether your OS and soundcard are up to it, please refer to the manuals :-)
I have tried making a multichannel patch, for eg [dac~ 1 2 3 4]. All that happens is I get a reduced signal from my 1 and 2 channels coming through my 3 and 4 channels.
this sound mainly like an internal mixer setting of your soundcard.
you'll need as many independent channels as independent speakers in your array....
"...playing at the same time".
e.g. you could do a 70 speaker installation with just a stereo output and a lot of routing logic, e.g. use relays to properly dispatch the audio signals to 2-of-70 speakers; obviously you won't be able to do WFS with a system like that, but you can make a sound wander around between speakers. bear in mind, that relays also have a nice aesthetics on their own...the computer we used for driving such an installation was named "Klapotetz" [1]
