This is right, yes, otherwise jack doesnt work. To start testing it the best is to simply use jackd as:
jackd -d alsa -d hw
and
pd -jack
As normal user. When starting jackd as root you will get problems with the cleanup. Never start jackd as root.
After you got it running, you can start fiddling with the patched kernel (or get it from planet, agnula) and with jackstart -R etc.

To still achieve higher scheduling, jack normally is run through the jackstart program, but this requires a small kernel patch. The FAQ on jackit.sf.net has more details.
