In short: No. That's an addition, so best left to the next minor version.
Long form:
I would point out that in software development, bug fixe releases (ie 0.48-1 to 0.48-2) generally only include bug fixes for regressions and bugs introduced in the latest minor version ie. 0.48. Minor versions introduce additions and changes (ie. 0.48 to 0.49) and major versions introduce major breaking API changes or some sort of "plateau" (ie 0.48 to 1.0).
It can get *very* confusing if you refer to a specific bug fix release version that introduces some sort of small or large change. The Pd compatibility modes are also only minor versions an don't refer to bugfixes versions.

I agree. Removing the prompt to add an external to the user paths makes sense in the context of [declare -path] searching user paths. Without this step, we're back to the problem of "I installed an external, but I can't load it, help." I know this prompt is loathed by some but it also keeps the amount of "help me" email down in the meantime until 0.49 includes the [declare] update.

This seems to be a common sticking point. Perhaps the GEM configure script should not *assume* FTGL is available by default?

Dear list,
i try to compile on a freshly installed system Gem from
https://github.com/umlaeute/Gem
Hopefully this is the latest version what is available online.
Anyway after congigure I have this output:
used optional libraries:
font-rendering : FTGL
default font :
image-support
use ImageMagick : no
use QuickTime : no
use AVFoundation : no
use TIFF : no
use JPEG : no
moviefile-support
use PLUGINS : yes
use mpeg : no
use mpeg-3 : no
use QuickTime : no
use AVFoundation :
use aviplay : no
use gmerlin : no
capture-support
use PLUGINS : yes
use v4l : no
use v4l2 : no
use ieee1394 : no
use DV : no
use Unicap : yes
use Video-for-WinDOS : no
use QuickTime : no
use AVFoundation : no
Now run make ...
I wuld gladly have all the options especially for pix_video to have a
choice (the real aim is to have videoPYLON get wrked on this system)
but make stops at this point:
*TextBase.h:38:12: fatal error: FTFont.h: No such file or directory #
include "FTFont.h"*
^~~~~~~~~~
compilation terminated.
What do I miss?
installed Gem with aptitude together with puredata cannot even create any
Gem related objects.
Best,
Popesz
i probably found the solution, or better my mis-use of [append]:
instead of doing an [append] for every new array,
[append] is done once and the resulting pointer is 're-used' everytime.

Hi, now that pd 0.48-2 is about to come out with the new deken, I'm
checking it out and giving it a deeper look. I wasn't really using it
before. So, I have a few questions and considerastions.
1- There's a default change, now it doesn't prompt you no more if you want
to add externals to the path. I get it this is more than intentional and
would like to inquire why. Thinking in the mind set of a newbie and
newcomer, this might be handy to suggest. Advanced users who are annoyed
can edit it in the preferences. Anyway, that's just my two pennies on it.
2- The preferences tab seems overcomplicated and I can't understand a few
aspects of it. There is a "check" box which I don't know what it is
supposed to check, and that I cannot actually click on it and activate the
checking. Also, when asking "Install externals to directory:" I can select
the same directory (/Users/porres/Documents/Pd/externals, in my case) in
four different places, and I don't know why can't it be just one.
cheers

The "GUI faking" works at the moment and it's fast. I'm less inclined to believe adding a webbrowser layer and in-app socket communication is going to be performant on mobile devices. Even if we have 100 Ghz, native (iOS CoreGraphics, etc) will still be faster.
What I *really* want is to simply ditch the GUI implementations and receive drawing commands directly from Pd. It could be "line here, rectangle there, text here" as it is now or it could be higher level as in "toggle here, object there" etc. If there was an abstraction layer replacing the TCL (maybe it looks/works like TCL in the end) wrapping the GUI, it would simply be easier to let Pd itself handle the logic and we just feed it input events.
I know the Purr Data team have worked this out, so maybe we can look at there model or think of something at a different level. I have some ideas and, after having dug into the GUI code to fix zooming/sizing, I know there isn't really that much raw drawing TCL in the core. And most of what's there is pretty simple and repetitive.
At this point, it would be great to solve this problem that preserves vanilla stability *and* provides for expanding GUI possibilities. It's totally possible and would lead to interesting stuff using libpd ... at the very least I would consider adding patch creation in PdParty.
